Which Livescope Mode Should You Use?

Garmin LiveScope is one of the most powerful real-time sonar tools available, but choosing the right mode matters. Whether you are scanning for fish ahead, looking straight down, or mapping shallow flats, each LiveScope mode points the transducer in a different direction and shows you a different picture.

When should I use Forward Mode?

Use Forward Mode when you are casting to fish ahead of the boat, following a lure back to the rod tip, or covering water to find suspended fish. It is the mode most anglers should run most of the day to locate structure before getting too close.

What You Will See

• A clear, sloping bottom line that extends away from the boat.
• Fish appearing as distinct arches or dots moving toward or away from the transducer.
• Your lure appearing as a bright, moving point of light that you can track as it descends toward the fish.

When should I use Down Mode?

Use Down Mode for vertical jigging under the boat, tracking your lure as fish follow it, or fishing directly over structure like brush piles, drop-offs, or rock piles. Choose this over Forward Mode when your target is directly beneath the hull.

What You Will See

• A flat, horizontal bottom line across the bottom of the screen.
• Fish appearing as vertical streaks or arches directly under the boat icon.
• A lure that drops straight down the screen, allowing you to see exactly when a fish moves in to strike.

When should I use Perspective Mode?

Use Perspective Mode for scanning shallow flats, grass beds, or finding fish around docks in 10 feet of water or less. It is the best choice for covering large, shallow areas quickly with a panoramic view.

What You Will See

• A wide, sweeping view of the bottom that looks like a map of the lake floor.
• Structure like grass edges or rock piles appearing as broad shapes stretching across the screen.
• Fish appearing as small, concentrated dots moving across the wide field of view.

Adjusting Perspective Mode for Depth

You can adjust the angle of the transducer in Perspective Mode to fine-tune the image based on depth:

• Shallow water (5-10 feet): Keep the transducer parallel to the surface for maximum coverage.
• Mid-depths (10-15 feet): Tilt the transducer down slightly to pick up more detail.
• Deeper than 15 feet: Tilt the transducer further down to maintain clarity while still covering a large area.
