Humminbird Transducer ID: What Transducer Do I Have?

Your Humminbird model gives you a good starting point, but the label on the transducer cable is the final answer. An XPLORE commonly comes with the Compact MEGA Imaging transducer. HELIX, SOLIX, and APEX MEGA Side Imaging packages commonly come with a MEGA Imaging transducer. That shortcut stops working if the unit was sold as CHO, the transducer was replaced, or the boat uses Built-In MEGA Imaging.

Before you buy a settings bundle, find the exact transducer code. Humminbird puts a label on the cable about 12 inches from the connector. Look for a model such as XM 14 HW CMSI T, XM 9 HW MSI T, or XNT 9 HW MSI 150 T.

The quick rule: If the label says CMSI, choose the Compact MEGA Imaging option. If it says MSI but not CMSI, choose the MEGA Side Imaging option. Check CMSI first because those four letters contain MSI.

What Humminbird Transducer Usually Comes With My Fishfinder?

The chart below shows the common factory transducer for MEGA Side Imaging packages. It is a shortcut, not proof of what is installed on your boat. Models marked CHO do not include a transducer, and Down Imaging or GPS-only packages use something different.

On a phone, swipe the chart left or right to see every column.

Humminbird fishfinder package Common included transducer Transducer family Option to choose in the Fishfinder Coach bundle
XPLORE 9, 10, or 12 CMSI+ (not CHO) XM 14 HW CMSI T Compact MEGA Side Imaging+ Humminbird XPLORE: Compact MEGA
HELIX 8, 9, 10, 12, or 15 MEGA SI+ (not CHO) XM 9 HW MSI T Full-size MEGA Side Imaging+ Humminbird HELIX/SOLIX/APEX: MEGA SI
HELIX 7 MEGA SI (not CHO) XNT 9 HW MSI 150 T MEGA Side Imaging Humminbird HELIX/SOLIX/APEX: MEGA SI
SOLIX G2 or G3 MEGA SI+ (not CHO) XM 14 HW MSI T Full-size MEGA Side Imaging+ Humminbird HELIX/SOLIX/APEX: MEGA SI
APEX MEGA SI+ (not CHO) XM 14 HW MSI T Full-size MEGA Side Imaging+ Humminbird HELIX/SOLIX/APEX: MEGA SI
Any model ending in CHO No transducer included Whatever was connected during installation Use the cable label or trolling-motor sonar type

Older systems can have different part numbers. Common examples are XM 9 20 MSI T on older HELIX MEGA SI units and XM 14 20 MSI T on SOLIX G1. Both are in the MEGA Imaging family because the model code says MSI, not CMSI.

How Do I Identify My Exact Humminbird Transducer?

Find the transducer cable where it plugs into the back of the display or an adapter cable. Follow the transducer's own cable until you find the factory label, usually about 12 inches from its connector. Read the full model code, then use the exact-code chart below.

  1. Turn the unit off before reaching behind the display.
  2. Find the cable that runs to the transducer, not the Ethernet, power, or MEGA Live cable.
  3. Look about 12 inches from the connector for the printed label.
  4. Photograph the entire code before moving any wiring.
  5. Match the code in the chart below. Do not choose by pin count alone.

A 9-pin connector usually points to the HELIX connector family. A 14-pin connector usually points to XPLORE, APEX, or SOLIX. That still does not tell you whether the transducer is CMSI, MSI, MDI, or 2D-only. Humminbird also sells the AD 1429 adapter, which connects a number 9 transducer to a number 14 sonar port. The letters on the cable label matter more than the plug.

Which Humminbird Transducer Codes Match Each Bundle Option?

Use this chart as the final bundle-selection check. The fishfinder series tells you what commonly came in the box. The transducer code tells you what is actually installed.

On a phone, swipe the chart left or right to see every column.

What Is the Physical Difference Between CMSI and MSI?

The Compact MEGA Imaging and full-size MEGA Imaging transducers are close in width, but the full-size housing is longer. Physical size helps when the label is damaged, but it should be a backup check. The HELIX 7 XNT 9 HW MSI 150 T is physically small and still belongs to the MSI family, not the CMSI family.

Why the HELIX 7 Transducer Can Fool You

The XNT 9 HW MSI 150 T used with HELIX 7 MEGA SI models measures about 3.7 inches long by 2.6 inches wide. It is much shorter than the full-size MSI housing, but its label still says MSI. Choose the MEGA Side Imaging option, not the Compact MEGA Side Imaging option.

What Do the Humminbird Transducer Model Codes Mean?

You do not need to decode every letter to choose a bundle. These are the pieces that settle the decision:

Code Meaning
9 Number 9 connector family, commonly used with HELIX
14 Number 14 connector family, commonly used with XPLORE, APEX, and SOLIX
HW High Wide Dual Spectrum CHIRP 2D element
MSI MEGA Side Imaging family
CMSI Compact MEGA Side Imaging family
MDI MEGA Down Imaging without a Side Imaging element
T Built-in temperature sensor
XM or XNT Transom-mount model
XTM Trolling-motor-mount model
XPTH or SSTH Thru-hull model

For example, XM 14 HW CMSI T is a transom-mount, number 14 connector, High Wide 2D, Compact MEGA Side Imaging transducer with temperature. XM 14 HW MSI T looks similar on paper, but the missing C puts it in the full-size MEGA Imaging family.

What If My Unit Is CHO or Uses Built-In MEGA Imaging?

CHO means control head only, so no transducer came in the box. Do not select a bundle from the display name. Identify the separate transducer that was installed, or check whether the display is using Built-In MEGA SI or Built-In MEGA DI from a Minn Kota trolling motor.

If the trolling motor says Built-In MEGA SI, use the MEGA Side Imaging option. If it says Built-In MEGA DI, it does not provide Side Imaging and is not one of the two Side Imaging options covered here.

Which Fishfinder Coach Bundle Option Should I Choose?

Once you have the cable code, open the 3-in-1 Sonar Bundle and use this final check:

  • Code says CMSI: choose Humminbird XPLORE: Compact MEGA.
  • Code says MSI but not CMSI: choose Humminbird HELIX/SOLIX/APEX: MEGA SI.
  • If you knowingly installed the full-size MSI transducer on an XPLORE, choose Humminbird HELIX/SOLIX/APEX: MEGA SI.
  • Code says MDI, DI, HW, or something else without MSI or CMSI: do not pick either Side Imaging option until the code is confirmed.

The label beats the fishfinder name. If the label is missing or unreadable, send Fishfinder Coach a clear photo of the transducer housing, connector, and any remaining cable markings before ordering.
