Screen Recording Your Active Target Sonar on Lowrance: A Step-by-Step Guide

Hey everyone, Hugh Cosculluela here — the Fishfinder Coach. In this post, I’ll walk you through two easy ways to record your Lowrance ActiveTarget sonar so you can save your best sonar moments, review them later, or share them with friends. Whether you’re troubleshooting, practicing, or showing off a big catch, recording your sonar can be a game-changer.

Method 1: Screen Recording with the Lowrance App

The first way to record your ActiveTarget is by using the Lowrance app on your phone. Once you’ve paired your phone with your unit (check out my setup video linked here if you haven’t done this yet), you can:

  1. Open the Lowrance app on your phone.

  2. Connect to your HDS Live unit.

  3. Tap the mirror button so your unit displays on your phone screen.

  4. Use your phone’s built-in screen recording feature (available on both iPhone and Android) to capture everything you see on the sonar.

This method is perfect for quick clips and sharing short recordings directly from your phone.

Method 2: Recording Directly with an SD Card

If you want to record all day or save higher-quality footage, the SD card method is best.

  1. Insert a microSD card (32GB or smaller) into your Lowrance unit.

  2. Open the ActiveTarget menu, tap More Options, then select Record Video.

  3. You’ll see a red blinking dot in the corner confirming that recording has started.

  4. When you’re done, just remove the card and view the files on your computer or with an SD card reader connected to your phone.

This approach is ideal if you want longer, uninterrupted recordings to analyze later.

Why Recording Sonar Helps Anglers

Being able to rewatch your sonar recordings can:

  • Help you fine-tune your boat control and sonar settings.

  • Let you analyze fish movement and structure locations after a trip.

  • Provide material for training, content creation, or sharing with other anglers.
